Cooper Goes 5 for 5
Cooper Re-Elected as Legislative Majority Leader for Fifth Consecutive Term

HUNTINGTON, NY–Just days after suspending his U.S. Senate exploratory campaign and endorsing Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Suffolk County Legislator Jon Cooper (D-Lloyd Harbor) was re-elected by his colleagues for a fifth consecutive term as Majority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature at an organizational meeting on Wednesday, December 16th. The Majority Caucus is a coalition of lawmakers from the Democratic, Independence and Working Families parties.

Cooper was first elected to this leadership post in 2005, when Democrats retook control of the 18-member body after an absence that dates back to the Watergate era. Cooper is the first and only Democrat to serve as Majority Leader in the 40-year history of the Suffolk County Legislature.

Cooper's re-election is testament to the leadership he has displayed during his decade-long tenure in public service. He thanked his colleagues for their unprecedented show of support and promised to reward their vote of confidence by continuing to display the zeal, compassion and integrity that both his fellow lawmakers and his constituents have come to expect from Cooper.

"In these trying times, there are no easy answers to the many challenges facing Suffolk County," Cooper said. "I'm grateful to my colleagues for once again placing their trust in me. With their support, I'm confident we can create a better and brighter future for our constituents."
