On Tuesday, August 10th, the Suffolk County Legislature approved
a bill introduced by Legislator Jon Cooper (D-Huntington) that
would ban the purchase, sale and use of Mobile Infrared Transmitter
(MIRT) devices in Suffolk County. MIRTs can change traffic light
signals from red to green within seconds at the push of a button.
MIRT
technology was originally developed for use by ambulance, fire
and police vehicles to clear intersections and halt opposing
traffic during emergency runs. Unfortunately, manufacturers of
these devices have begun to offer their products for sale to the
general public. This could create an extremely dangerous situation
if the use of MIRT devices becomes widespread. The frequent and
unchecked interruptions in the flow of traffic would lead to a
gridlock nightmare on Suffolk’s roadways.
The ban will not
apply to any ambulance, fire, police or other emergency personnel
while they are engaged in their official duties.
Any violation of the law will be punishable by a fine of up to
$250 for each violation.
“
The improper use of MIRT devices can clearly result in hazardous
conditions for other drivers and creates a serious problem for
law enforcement officers,” Cooper said today. “It was
important for us to address this growing threat to public safety
on Suffolk’s roads. The potential for chaos is enormous.
Hopefully, Suffolk’s ban will lead to similar action at the
state level.”
Robert Moore, Chief of Department of the Suffolk
County Police Department, stated, “In the wrong hands, MIRTs
can seriously disrupt traffic and endanger the public. This legislation
puts
the public on notice and authorizes the police to act in the best
interests of public safety.”
