Legislator Jon Cooper, flanked by other supporters of campaign finance reform, announced his introduction of legislation that would put a referendum on the ballot to provide partial public funding for county election campaigns. At an annual cost of only 50 cents per resident, his proposal would require participating candidates to cap their campaign spending and would prohibit them from accepting money from political action committees, lobbyists or companies that do business with Suffolk County. Joining Legislator Cooper at the press conference were representatives of the Suffolk County Campaign Finance Board, the Suffolk County League of Women Voters, the Long Island Progressive Coalition and the Suffolk County Independence Party.
