Legislator Jon Cooper joined a number of local children who proudly displayed the fruits of their "Three Sisters Garden." With the help of a county grant provided by Legislator Cooper, the Northport Historical Society was able to begin a project to teach children about Native American crops, such as corn, beans and squash, which were grown in this area as the mainstays of their diet. These vegetables were called the "three sisters" because they were raised in combination with one another so that the corn could provide stakes for the beans to climb up, while the squash surrounded it all, discouraging invasion by raccoons and other animals.
