Legislator Jon Cooper looked on in awe as Stephanie Gress, the Natural History Curator of the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, gave some lucky students a special tour of the museums natural history exhibit, which is in the early stages of renovation. The center of interest in the exhibit hall is a 35-foot-long whale shark, which is one of the largest skin-mounted fish on display anywhere in the world. It was caught off the south shore of Long Island in 1935.
