Outraged by the tragic crushing death of a Sag Harbor canine companion (a beloved three-year-old mixed breed named Zephyr) by a steel animal trap while hiking with his owner at a nature preserve in Southampton, Legislator Jon Cooper gathered with animal activists, pet owners and concerned citizens as he announced his introduction of legislation supporting a ban on steel-jaw leghold traps and body-gripping traps in Suffolk County. Similar bans on these inhumane trapping devices have already been enacted by eight states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Washington), as well as by nearly 90 countries around the world.
